Is a Standing Seam Metal Roof Right for You?

Standing seam metal isn’t for everyone—and that’s okay. This quick checklist will help you see if it’s a good fit for your home or building.

  • Plan to stay: You plan to stay in your home for many years. Metal roofing shines over the long term.
  • Low maintenance: You’re tired of replacing shingle roofs and want a permanent solution.
  • Energy efficiency: You care about reflective panels and reducing heat gain.
  • Minimal repairs: You want a system that needs far fewer touch-ups over its life.
  • Investment mindset: You see your roof as a long-term investment in your property.
  • Clean look: You want a cleaner, higher-end architectual aesthetic.

If most of these sound like you, a standing seam metal roof might be the right move. If you’re unsure, we’re happy to talk it through.

Metal Roof vs. Shingles: Looking at Lifetime Cost

Standing seam metal roofing usually costs more upfront than asphalt shingles—but the numbers tell a different story over time.

Upfront Cost

Shingles: Lower initial price, but need replacement every 15–20 years. Metal: Higher upfront investment, built for decades.

Replacement & Repair

Shingles are vulnerable to wind and hail damage. Metal uses interlocking panels to resist leaks and reduce maintenance.

Energy & Comfort

Shingles absorb and hold heat. Metal reflects sunlight and releases heat quickly with proper ventilation.

If you’re protecting a long-term investment, metal often makes more sense when you look at the full picture.

Common Myths About Metal Roofs

We hear the same worries again and again. Here are the most common myths and the truth behind them.

Myth #1 – “Too noisy.”

With insulation and decking, metal roofs are typically no louder than shingle roofs during rain.

Myth #2 – “Attracts lightning.”

Metal does not attract lightning. It safely dissipates energy and is non-combustible.

Myth #3 – “Rusts quickly.”

Modern systems use coated, high-quality steel specifically designed to resist rust for decades.

Myth #4 – “Hotter homes.”

It’s the opposite: metal reflects sunlight and releases heat faster than traditional materials.

If you have other concerns about metal roofs, we’re happy to answer them honestly.

Roofing Terms, Explained Simply

Standing Seam Metal Roof – A metal roof made of long panels that lock together with raised seams so fasteners are hidden and protected.

Hidden Fasteners – Screws or clips that are covered by the metal panels instead of exposed on top, helping prevent leaks over time.

Gauge (24 vs. 26 vs. 29 Gauge) – The thickness of the metal. A lower number means thicker, stronger metal. 29 gauge is common for exposed-fastener panels, 26 gauge is typical for residential standing seam, and 24 gauge is more often used on heavier-duty or commercial projects.

Underlayment – A waterproof layer installed between the roof decking and the metal panels; it’s a key backup barrier against leaks.

Roof Decking (Sheathing) – The wood surface (usually plywood or OSB) that sits on top of your trusses or rafters and supports the roofing system.

Ice Damming – When snow melts and refreezes at the roof edge, causing ice build-up that can push water back under shingles. Metal systems and good underlayment help reduce this risk.

Flashing – Shaped metal pieces used around chimneys, walls, and valleys to keep water from sneaking into gaps.

Pitch (Roof Slope) – How steep your roof is. Some roofing materials and details change depending on how low or high the pitch is.

Color Options

For replacement projects, we remove the old roof, inspect and repair the roof decking as needed, and install a platinum synthetic roofing underlayment for extra protection.

Step 3 – Detailed Proposal & Options

You receive a clear proposal that outlines scope, materials, underlayment, and pricing so you can see exactly what your standing seam metal roof will include.

Step 6 – Standing Seam Metal Installation & Walkthrough

We roll your metal panels on-site, install your hidden fastener standing seam system, complete trims and flashings, clean up the job site, and do a final walkthrough with you.

Financing & Payment Options

Every project and budget is different.

Clients commonly pay via cash/check, home equity (HELOC or home equity loan), or financing arranged through their bank or credit union.

Homeowners interested in financing may also explore third-party options such as:

• Acorn Finance
• LightStream
• LendingTree

Fieldstone Standing Seam does not provide financing. All approvals and terms are handled directly by the lender.

Hail-damaged shingles don’t have to mean replacing your roof with the same vulnerable material. Many homeowners choose to upgrade to standing seam metal roofing for greater durability, longevity, and protection. Depending on your policy, insurance proceeds may contribute toward your new roof.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does a standing seam metal roof really last?

A properly installed standing seam metal roof can often last 40–60 years or more. Many homeowners see it as a one-time roof for the life of the home, instead of something that needs replacing every couple of decades.

Is a metal roof a lot louder in the rain than shingles?

No. With proper decking and insulation, standing seam metal roofs are usually similar in sound to asphalt shingles. In most homes, you won’t notice a big difference in rain or storms.

Will a metal roof make my home hotter in summer?

It’s usually the opposite. The metal panels reflect a lot of the sun’s heat instead of absorbing it like dark shingles. That can help your attic stay cooler and may reduce strain on your cooling system.

Does a metal roof attract lightning?

Metal does not attract lightning. If your home is struck, the metal can help safely disperse the energy. Most insurance companies do not rate metal roofs as more likely to be hit than other roof types.

Can a standing seam roof be installed over my existing shingles?

In some cases, yes, but not always. We look at the condition of the existing roof, structure, and local code. In many projects we remove old shingles so we can inspect the decking and give you a clean, long-term base.

How much more does metal cost than asphalt shingles?

Upfront, standing seam metal usually costs more than a standard asphalt roof. Over 30–50 years, many homeowners find it compares well or even wins, because it avoids multiple tear-offs, replacements, and many common repair issues.

What kind of maintenance does a standing seam roof need?

Very little. We recommend occasional visual checks, keeping gutters and valleys clear, and having us or another qualified pro inspect it if you see anything unusual. There are no exposed fasteners to constantly re-seal.

Will a metal roof affect my insurance or resale value?

Often, yes—in a good way. Some insurers may offer considerations for impact- or fire-resistant materials. Many buyers see a standing seam roof as a premium upgrade and like knowing they probably won’t need to replace it soon. Details depend on your policy and market.

Can I choose the color, and will it fade over time?

Yes. We offer a range of colors designed for roofing. We use high-quality finishes like Sherwin-Williams WeatherXL®, engineered to resist fading and chalking for many years. Over decades some change is normal, but we only use products we believe will age well.

How does the quote process work with Fieldstone Standing Seam?

We usually start with satellite imagery to provide a ballpark range so you can see if metal fits your budget. If that looks reasonable, we schedule a site visit, walk the roof with you, answer questions, and then send a clear written quote.

Do you offer financing or payment options?

Most clients pay by cash, check, or through their own bank or credit union. For those wanting dedicated project financing, we can recommend third-party options such as Acorn Finance that may help you compare offers. All approvals and terms come directly from the lender you choose.

What areas do you serve?

We primarily serve West Virginia and the Ohio Valley region. If you’re not sure whether you’re in our area, reach out with your address and we’ll let you know quickly.
